I’d like to add a serious stretching component to my workout, but I’m still a newb when it comes to fitness. Could anyone recommend a stretching DVD that I could use?

    Thanks

    Re: Stretching DVD?

The P90X workout DVD series has a specific stretching DVD that is about 45 minutes long. Don’t know if you can buy it separately. A good yoga DVD will stretch you out too.

    Anyone else?:dunno:

While I’m not opposed to buying specific dvds, you might be able to simply watch free videos found on places like YouTube and incorporate those into your stretching regiment.

Truthfully, I don’t spend much time stretching. The yoga stuff interests me, but really don’t have the luxury of devoting a ton of time to stretching & workout. So I tend to favor brief stretching after a decent warmup.

My favorite for articles, demos, and workout ideas come from free sources:
    http://www.crossfit.com/cf-info/excercise.html
    http://www.rosstraining.com/articles.html
    YouTube search: stretching exercises
    YouTube search: plyometrics

I know a guy at work who bought the P90x exercise stuff. He likes it, but I don’t think he’s sticking with it. P90x is about increasing workout intensity and keeping the body guessing when it comes to exercises. Weights, body resistance movements, plyometrics, core strengthening… I still think crossfit has them beat but haven’t actually seen anything more than the p90x infomercials. The difference is p90x puts it into a neat little package and charges you for it.

In anything, consistency is king and neither program will work if you don’t stick to it. A friend of mine routinely “buys” a new item which is going to help him get into shape. I’m convinced there’s something in his mind which makes him think spending money on fitness items is tantamount to taking steps in the right direction. I have a garage full of stuff built on that same principle… but I could probably get rid of every bit of it and still get a better workout than I used to get with nothing more than a pull-up bar and a single 75 lb dumb bell I bought for $44.

What was the topic again? lol… oh yeah. Stretching dvd. I’d go for the free stuff first and save the money for stuff like the Bas Rutten CDs. thumbsup

I’ve seen the P90X dvd’s and am very unimpressed with them. I think crossfit is the way to go. P90X gets you moving and stuff for sure and it is a good workout, but I’m a non-beliver in isolation exercises (abs one day, chest and back the next). Plus they get boring and repetative. Crossfit keeps you guessing.

But really anything to get you moving would help.

    P.S.- I’m sure you can download the P90X yoga/strech videos from somewhere………. 😉

    Re: Stretching DVD?

I’ve never found a stretching dvd worth owning. I did come across this book a few years ago that has some great stretches in it: http://www.amazon.com/Stretching-Life-Benjamin-Griffes/dp/1577853970/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1208201055&sr=8-1

One of the stretches in that book pretty much fixed a repetitive stress injury that was getting horrible.

Otherwise – I’d agree with vwr and go with the youtube thing and spend the money on other stuff.

Ah, I didn’t know that’s how their program works. For some reason I thought it was much closer to whole body tabata or HIIT style training.

Thanks for the great advice, I appreciate it!

    On a slightly related note,

Um, erm, *cough*, who is Bas Rutten and why does everyone recommend his CDs?

He’s a prominent MMA fighter and MMA trainer. He also has an intro in Darren’s book! His DVD’s have alot of MMA drills in it and it also has alot of bag/striking training. Alot of people like to use them for at home training and to suplement traditional cardio.

Here are a couple of sites that talk about Dynamic Stretching. The second is a lengthy article by Thomas Kurz (Stretching Scientifically) from a 1999 TKD Times magazine.
I started doing dynamic stretching back when I was going to KM class and have recently re-read the article and incorporated the stretches into my warm ups again.

I start with some static stretches when I first wake up and then do the dynamic before my workouts, even if Iím not hitting the bag or practicing Krav that day. Like anything it has to be consistent or else you wonít see the results.
